A Picardy native who studied law in Paris and Rennes, Xavier Prévost joined the ENS Cachan in 2003, where he obtained the agrégation – a high-level competitive exam for teachers in France – in Economics and Management before starting a PhD in Legal History in Lille and Paris. He was a temporary teaching and research assistant at the University of Paris-Descartes and then at the University of Paris II. In 2012, he joined the École Nationale des Chartes where he studied the diversity of historical methods. He earned the top spot in the concours d’agrégation in Legal History in 2014 and was appointed Professor in September 2014 at the age of 31. He chose to begin his career as a teacher-researcher at the University of Bordeaux because of the reputation of its History of Legal Thought Research Centre and the standing of the Faculty of Law and Political Science.

At the University of Bordeaux, Xavier Prévost directed the Institut de Recherche Montesquieu and sat on the board of the Doctoral School of Law from 2016 to 2022, and was chair of the Legal History department from 2021 to 2023. Between 2019 and 2022, he was a member of the steering committee for the CHANGES and DETS research departments.

He also has close ties with the Bordeaux Montaigne University: he sat on the board of the Doctoral School Montaigne-Humanities from 2018 to 2022 and is currently a partner member of the Centre Montaigne as well as a member of the scientific board of the House of Human Sciences Bordeaux.

In collaboration with researchers from French, European and international universities, Xavier Prévost conducts research on law and legal knowledge during the Renaissance. Since 2020, this research has been part of the interdisciplinary project he is leading as a junior member of the Institut Universitaire de France on the encyclopaedism of French humanist jurists.

Thanks to his academic background spanning a number of human and social sciences as well as his involvement in the teaching and research community, Xavier Prévost joined Aurélie Bedel in 2023 as co-leader of the working group on interdisciplinarity at the University of Bordeaux.

He was appointed Interdisciplinary Strategy Coordinator of the University of Bordeaux by Dean Lewis, President of the university, on 1 March 2024.

With this assignment, our university aims to encourage, stimulate and promote interdisciplinarity, in order to make it a factor of efficiency and quality in research, teaching and innovation, as well as a response to societal challenges, and to help shape the image of the University of Bordeaux as a major research university with international appeal.
