The research teams at the University of Bordeaux carry out research on human subjects that do not fall within the remit of French Ethics Committees (Comités de protection des personnes - CPP). As they do not aim to “develop biological or medical knowledge”, it is not considered “research involving human subjects” (RIPH) within the meaning of the Jardé Law.

However, these research projects may require the opinion of an ethics committee, whether for funding or publication purposes, or in order to obtain a formal opinion on the ethical dimension of their project. The University of Bordeaux's Research Ethics Committee (CER-UB) is responsible for providing an opinion on these projects.

The committee’s responsibilities

The main responsibilities of the CER-UB are to:

  • Issue a formal written opinion on compliance with ethical requirements and regulations in force for each research project that is submitted to it;
  • Offer support and guide applicants towards the relevant regulatory bodies;
  • Help promote ethical principles and disseminate best practices and knowledge by providing recommendations and documentation, as well as offering training and information on ethical issues related to scientific research.
