Transitions: the University of Bordeaux advances in the 2023 Times Higher Education Impact ranking

Updated on:

The University of Bordeaux is ranked among the world's top 300 higher education establishments in the 2023 Times Higher Education Impact ranking, which classifies universities according to the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. This year, the university ranks 4th overall nationally, and 3rd university after Montpellier and PSL (Paris Sciences & Lettres).

Supported by the British newspaper Times Higher Education (THE), the Impact ranking is designed to assesses higher education institutions’ commitment to sustainable development, in relation to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in a number of areas: research, teaching, outreach and university operations. In order to evaluate institutions from 112 countries, THE Impact uses a variety of data, including open statistics and data supplied by the institution itself.

In the previous edition, the University of Bordeaux was ranked 301-400 overall. This rise to the top 300 institutions in 2023 reflects both the acceleration of its actions in favour of transitions and the collective mobilisation of its teams. For its 4th participation, the university was particularly well evaluated for the following SDGs: 'Quality education' (SDG 4), 'Reduced inequalities' (SDG 10) and 'Good health and well-being' (SDG 3).

At the same time, and in the spirit of a more structured self-assessment approach, the university's DD&RS Label - Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility - has just been renewed for another 4 years, after having initially been awarded in June 2021 for a 2 year period.

The University of Bordeaux is pursuing its commitment through a number of other projects, such as the integration of transitions into the university's educational offer, the implementation of an inter-establishment mobility plan in partnership with the other higher education institutions in Bordeaux Metropole, as well as the energy renovation of its buildings within the framework of the France Relance plan.
