Fly to Istanbul for a double degree in Global Security and International Policy Analysis

This international Master programme is dedicated to the training of international relations and global security policy analysts. Study options include the Middle East, the Caucasus, or the Asia-Pacific region.

Delivered jointly by the University of Bordeaux (Bordeaux, France) and Galatasaray University (Istanbul, Turkey), the Global Security and International Policy Analysis Master programme provides aspiring policy analysts with teachings on the theories of international relations, international political economy, area studies, security studies and methodology. The programme is also a valuable opportunity to create strong links between French and Turkish student communities, thus promoting not only academic exchanges but also solid linguistic, cultural and personal exchanges.

Upon completion of the programme, students are awarded two degrees: a Master in International relations from Galatasary University, and a Master in political science from the University of Bordeaux.

10 students per cohort may register for the programme: 5 from the University of Bordeaux and 5 from Galatasaray University. Students spend their first year in Istanbul, where they are taught international relations theories, and electives focusing on chosen cultural areas (the Middle-East, Europe, Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, Central Asia and the Caucasus region, the Asia-Pacific region, Russia, or the USA). Then, they head to Bordeaux where course content focuses on global security issues and methodology in policy analysis (policy monitoring, policy briefs, case studies). The mandatory writing of a research thesis (with viva), and an optional internship (with report) concludes this second year.

Course content is taught entirely in French, except for language classes, and includes the following topics:

  • IR fundamentals: History of international relations, international political economy, theories of international relations, Turkish foreign policy, critical approaches of international relations, etc.
  • Area studies - electives: Political systems in Europe, Latin American geopolitics, political dynamics in Sub-Saharan Africa, contemporary issues in US foreign policy, security in Central Asia and the Caucasus, geopolitics in the Asia-Pacific region, politics, security, and strategy in Russia, etc.
  • Global security issues: New security issues and challenges, the nuclear issue: proliferation and non-proliferation, violence and conflicts, etc.
  • Methodology: Policy analysis case studies, methodology of international analysis, etc.

 

This unique Master programme in France enables students to study political science and international relations in the cosmopolitan city of Istanbul, which is at the crossroads of Europe and the Middle East, thus developing students’ intercultural skills.

Upon completion, students are able to apply for international policy analysts jobs. The main career opportunities can be found in the following sectors:

  • Public administration: Ministry for Foreign affairs and Ministry of Defence, local administrations
  • International and regional organisations (UN, NATO, OSCE, EU, etc.)
  • NGOs
  • Private firms (e.g. : international security consulting)

Students can also apply for a doctorate and pursue a career in research and teaching in this field of studies.
