The 13th edition of the Bordeaux Summer Schools programme took place in June and July 2024. Over 150 participants, including around 100 international students, gathered both on the University of Bordeaux campus and online to enhance their skills, acquire new knowledge, and develop their professional networks by taking part in one of the 9 summer schools on offer.
Every year during the summer months, the Bordeaux campus hosts several high-quality, multidisciplinary, international summer schools, covering a broad range of subjects and open to graduate and doctoral students as well as young researchers. These research oriented courses are also a unique opportunity for participants to interact and learn from a diverse range of cultures, both in and out of lectures!
The Bordeaux Summer Schools programme is highly selective and targets international talents. Courses offer an enriching curricular experience with, depending on the discipline, a mixture of theoretical and practical training that demands a notable level of expertise and knowledge.
I chose to apply to the "Gender equality and diversity in academia” Bordeaux Summer School because of the University of Bordeaux's renowned reputation in sociology, more specifically gender equality, which aligns perfectly with my academic and professional interests. The opportunity to study under esteemed speakers from diverse backgrounds was incredibly appealing. Throughout the programme, I gained invaluable insights into gender equality in academia, and also tools to guide my professional path in the future, which have allowed me to broaden my understanding and refine my expertise in these areas. The hands-on workshops, engaging lectures, and collaborative projects not only enhanced my knowledge but also provided me with practical skills that I can apply in my future studies and career. Overall, the summer school was a transformative experience, offering me new perspectives and fostering personal and academic growth that will undoubtedly shape my journey ahead.

Covering a wide array of topics such as cardiology, gender studies, neuroscience, energy storage and more, the 9 summer schools of the 2024 edition gathered around 150 participants, of which two thirds were international students. 124 experts from all around the world took part in the sessions, which were an opportunity for them to interact with young talents and give rise to new projects and collaborations.

Organising the "MAterials to Technologies for advanced Energy Storages (MATES)" summer school at the University of Bordeaux offers numerous benefits for both organisers and participants. For me, this event is a unique opportunity to strengthen existing partnerships while establishing new ones. The informal and interactive setting of a summer school facilitates exchanges with colleagues in a context very different from a traditional conference or meeting. It is also a chance to explore research fields related to my interests, but which I am less familiar with, while discovering associated industrial developments. For students, this summer school is an especially enriching experience. It promotes exchanges with participants from diverse scientific and geographical backgrounds, opening them up to new perspectives. The lab visits on the Bordeaux campus provide direct immersion into a dynamic research environment. Working in groups with students from various origins stimulates collaboration and mutual learning while helping them build their network. This includes connections with both fellow students and, more importantly, with the instructors. The close interaction between instructors and participants fosters deeper and more engaging discussions compared to traditional lectures or conferences. In short, this summer school is a valuable opportunity to build bridges between research, education, and international collaboration.
