The first exchanges between the universities of Bordeaux and Bayreuth date back to 2003, with student mobilities in the fields of chemistry, the environment and ecology. In 2014, a framework agreement was signed which led, in 2018, to the development of a double Bachelor degree in Franco-German law and, in 2019, to the creation of the Gateway Office within the University of Bordeaux - a privileged point of contact for members of the University of Bayreuth (UBT) wishing to establish scientific collaborations with partners in France, Southern Europe and North Africa, and, conversely, for partners in Bordeaux and in the targeted regions wishing to collaborate with the University of Bayreuth.

In 2023, a new double Master degree in development economics was launched, and for the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year, disciplinary visiting groups are planned to develop training and research links between the two universities, particularly in the fields of materials, batteries, African studies, as well as nutrition and health.

From September 25th to 27th 2024, a joint symposium on "Polymer Chemistry, Material Sciences and Battery Research" will be held in Bordeaux, with the participation of 13 professors from UBT. The main Bordeaux partners are the Institute of Condensed Matter Chemistry Bordeaux (ICMCB - CNRS, Bordeaux INP, University of Bordeaux) and the Organic Polymer Chemistry Laboratory (LCPO - CNRS, Bordeaux INP, University of Bordeaux), as well as representatives from the Paul Pascal Research Centre (CRPP - CNRS, University of Bordeaux) and the Institute of Molecular Sciences (ISM - CNRS, Bordeaux INP, University of Bordeaux).
