Gap year or semester

Updated on:

A gap year or semester (called "césure" in French) is a system that allows students to take a one- or two-semester break from academia to develop non-academic skills and acquire new personal or professional experience in France or abroad.

Why take a break from academia?

  • To study something different from your initial curriculum, including study abroad
  • To acquire professional experience (an internship must not last more than  6 months in the same organisation or company)
  • For a business creation project
  • Civic service, European volunteer service, non-profit voluntary work
  • International experience in a business (VIE) or in a French administration (VIA)
  • International community volunteer (humanitarian work)
  • Volunteer work, personal objectives

Your status while you're away

You retain your student status during your gap experience.

Registration fee: you must pay a reduced registration fee as well as the CVEC (student and campus life contribution).

Scholarships: if you are eligible for a scholarship, you can apply for its continuation.

French national health insurance: contact your health insurance branch office to get information you need to maintain coverage.

Returning to your studies

Before leaving, you signed an academic contract in which the university committed to letting you re-enrol in the same programme you were in before your departure. As a result, you will still have a place in your programme.
However, beware, the re-enrolment procedure is NOT automatic and you must contact your registrar as soon as you return to regularise your registration status.

If you want to change programmes after your gap period, contact the Career Guidance Centre (EOC) for guidance and advice.

Everything I got out of the experience was positive. I learned a lot about myself and now I know what I want to do with my life.

Lola , 21 years old, doing a Bachelor in biology, volunteered for 6 months in a chimpanzee rescue centre in Upper Guinea.

How do you apply?

Post-baccalauréat gap period

You must apply as soon as you fill in your list of choices on Parcoursup (in French). A gap year is granted for the whole academic year.

  • Listing your choices
On Parcoursup, you need to tick the box 'request a gap year'. The university is informed of your request once you have been admitted to the programme chosen. Please note: The gap year is not granted automatically and admission to a programme is not enough for being granted a gap year.
  • Application form
Check the deadlines and return the completed application form to: cesure%40u-bordeaux.fr. The application form will be reviewed by a commission that will take into account the quality and coherence of your project and you will receive notification of their decision by post.
  • Assessment commissions
The first commission meets in mid-July (Parcoursup main admission phase), the second in mid-September (Parcoursup complementary admission phase).
  • To make it easier to begin gap years starting in September, it is advisable to submit your application in July, even if you have not registered yet.

Bachelor or Master gap period

You can take off on a gap experience right from the first year of your programme but NOT after the last year of your programme (after validating your Bachelor or Master if you don't intend to continue studying at the University of Bordeaux).
If you have just registered at the University of Bordeaux, you must also have been enrolled in a programme for at least a semester before you can apply for a gap experience.

  • Deadlines
You want to go away during the 1st semester (September): apply in May of the same year
You want to go away during the 2nd semester (January): apply in October of the previous year
  • Application form
    Download the application form
and return it completed to the specified department in your programme.
Applications are reviewed by a commission within the College/School corresponding to your degree programme and take into the project quality, coherence and development. The more structured and developed the project, the more likely it is to be accepted. You will be notified of the acceptance or refusal of your application within 10 days of the commission's review.
In the event of refusal, you can file an appeal that will be examined by a commission at the university level.

Doctoral gap period

  • A gap period can be:
in the 2nd year for full-time doctoral students
between the 2nd and 5th year for part-time doctoral students

After the gap period, you are automatically re-enrolled in the doctoral programme you were in at the outset. The gap period is not counted in the duration of the thesis.

  • Deadlines
You want to go away during the 1st semester (September): apply in May of the same year
You want to go away during the 2nd semester (January): apply in October of the previous year
  • Application form
    Download the application form
and return it completed to your doctoral school.
Applications are reviewed by a commission within the Graduate Research School, which takes into the project quality and coherence.
The more structured and developed the project, the more likely it is to be accepted.
In the event of refusal, you can file an appeal that will be examined by a commission at the university level.

Gap period abroad

To apply for a gap period abroad, you should follow the standard procedure based on your year of studies but you must also contact your programme's Mobility Office and submit your application form for approval

For post-baccalauréat gap periods: the department in charge of applications sends the application to the Mobility Offices for approval.

That approval only concerns the geographical destination and is based on recommendations from the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs.
An approval can be suspended in the event of a change in situation in the host country between the approval issue date and the student's date of departure. Without approval or in the event of a refusal, the project for a gap period will not be accepted.
